Though gadgetry has its expected place in Duplicity, this brainy lark doesn't go in for tailfins morphing into machine guns. The rat-tat-tat is in the dialogue, and the gadgets are sophisticated office equipment. Or, in one key sequence, a most handy cellphone. Writer/director Tony Gilroy made his debut as a director UGG Brookfieldwith Michael Clayton, a heavier but deliciously twisty yarn. His new film isn't merely more of the same. Were it not for last summer's French thriller Tell No One, Duplicity would boast the trickiest plot structure in recent memory. Clive Owens and Julia Roberts (reunited after 2004's Closer) play spies who meet cute at a sunny outdoor "do" where the booze flows. He hits on her, and, predictably, she verbalizes dislike. But before their work interferes, they end up in the sack at a posh hotel. The twists encompass a series of mostly exotic-locale flashbacks that could have been irritating but instead enhance our understanding of the pair's equally byzantine relationship. Air Max 03 And twists, of course, turn out to mean Clayton-caliber surprises — which means that plot spoilers are especially taboo. Suffice it to say that the two eventually turn to corporate spying sometimes in tandem, sometimes not. It's risky, high- stakes madness involving the top floor-dwelling heads of rival companies who are introduced during a hilarious opening sequence. What a study in contrasts. Big shot Paul Giamatti is repulsively coarse, the kind of guy who probably got to the top by letting the boss beat him in golf. His rival is Tom Wilkinson, recalling his performance as James Baker in HBO's Recount: a smoothie who picks your pocket but is urbane about it. And theUGG Brookfield Tall two love each other like an NFL receiver loves the defensive behemoth who levels him after the whistle. Hollywood used to produce satisfying, big-star entertainments all year long. Now, for movie lovers, the first four months of the year are as barren as the Mojave Desert. So with its smart writing delivered by an in-synch quartet, savor Duplicity as the ideal spring gift.
